Everywhere you turn, there are tiny yellow Minions taking over the world, and it’s best to just embrace it. Despicable Me’s adorable babbling sidekicks get their own movie on July 9, and what better way to celebrate them than with a menu fit for for mini villains?
Whether you’re entertaining a bunch of kids for a birthday bash or embracing your inner child before seeing the new flick, these seven Minion-themed dishes are perfect. Some are foods that Minions would actually eat — like bananas and soda — while others are based on what they look like (Twinkies, of course) or callbacks to the first two movies, Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2.
Minions look like bananas and they go nuts for them, so banana pudding is the ideal dish to whip up. The added chocolate, homemade whipped cream and chocolate shavings don’t hurt, either.
The original Despicable Me movie featured Gru and the Minions operating tiny cookie robots to steal a shrink ray back from fellow villain Vector, so you could serve these plain or put little legs and heads on them for fun.
Minions look like Twinkies, and if you draw blue overalls and faces on these homemade snack cakes, they’ll be delicious and adorable.
In Despicable Me 2, Gru ran a fake bakery, but Dave the Minion really loved decorating cupcakes. Make him proud with your own lemon cakes.
Despicable Me 2’s main villain was El Macho, who served guacamole in big tortilla-chip hats and had a top-secret salsa recipe. Combine both of those dishes with Kelsey Nixon’s Tomatillo Guacamole, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can make your own chip hat, too.
Since Minions also love apples — or “bapples,” as they call them — you can elevate classic pigs in a blanket with chicken-apple sausage.
Watch this “baby” Minion drink a bottle of soda. Now you understand why you have to make this pomegranate soda, right?
